Before the world cup there was a big resentment about Shakira singing the Fifa World Cup anthem song some believing that Fifa could have used someone from Africa. There was also many complaints in the choice of song some saying that it did not represent Africa and what does Waka Waka mean exactly. We published a articleexplaining that the World cup is not about Africa only held here and Fifa is a business and they make choices according to what will bring in the money. We where proven right when Waka Waka became the best-selling World Cup song in history. Shakira also proved that she was the best choice with a great performance at the World Cup and causing sales rocket.
At as much as people would like to deny it, it has helped to show the world that here are South African artist who can keep up with international stars. With Freshlyground performing along side Shakira and all the other artist who shared the stage with the international stars, they performed on a equal footing. Even though Freshlyground makes their appearance close to the end of the song people took notice of them.
But the people who objected should have been more graceful in their approach, some was really nasty and made personal attacks on Shakira when the choice was really Fifa federations. Personally I thought it was perfect accept for some of the lyrics about soldiers, as Africa has a long history of violence, but further I can not find fault with it. The beat makes a person want to dance and the whole song brings an infectious enthusiasm for the game making people want to celebrate.
After all is said and done Waka Waka - This time for Africa is still popular even two months after the world cup still topping sales - making it a success.
For those who missed it here is the music video of Waka Waka - This time for Africa by Shakira featuring i uplod video folder
